Surviving Kampala's Potholes: Suspension Care Tips

Kampala's roads are notorious for potholes. Here's how to protect your suspension, what to inspect after hitting a big one, and when to replace parts.

Kampala's Road Reality

If you drive in Kampala, you know the struggle. From Ntinda to Bwaise, from Kireka to Nateete — potholes are everywhere. And it's not just Kampala; upcountry roads like Gulu Highway and Mbarara Road can be equally punishing.

What Happens When You Hit a Pothole

A single hard impact can:

  • Bend or crack a wheel rim
  • Damage a tyre (internal sidewall damage may not be visible)
  • Knock wheel alignment out of spec
  • Damage shock absorbers
  • Bend steering components (tie rods, control arms)

Signs Your Suspension Needs Attention

Shock Absorbers:

  • Car bounces excessively after bumps
  • Nose dives heavily when braking
  • Uneven tyre wear
  • Oil leaking from shock body

Wheel Alignment:

  • Car pulls to one side
  • Steering wheel is off-centre when driving straight
  • Rapid or uneven tyre wear

Ball Joints / Tie Rods:

  • Clunking noise over bumps
  • Loose or vague steering feel
  • Vibration in steering wheel

Immediate Checks After a Big Impact

  1. Pull over safely and visually inspect the tyre for bulges or cuts
  2. Check if the car drives straight — if it pulls, get alignment checked
  3. Listen for new noises on the next few drives
  4. Have a mechanic check the wheel and suspension if the impact was severe

Preventive Maintenance Schedule

ComponentCheck Interval
Shock absorbersEvery 20,000 km or annually
Wheel alignmentEvery 10,000 km or after major impact
Tyre rotationEvery 10,000 km
Ball jointsEvery 30,000 km
Wheel balancingEvery 10,000 km

Driving Tips for Ugandan Roads

  • Slow down before potholes — even 20 km/h less makes a big difference
  • Don't brake in a pothole — brake before, then release
  • Maintain correct tyre pressure — slightly higher pressure (2–3 PSI above minimum) helps on rough roads
  • Avoid overloading — extra weight multiplies suspension stress
